Mountain of the Sea
(large image - Sisters in the Light)
Maori legend recounts the journey of two sisters, Moutuhora (Whale Island) and Whakaari (White Island) who, under the protection of darkness, set off to find a place to live, amidst the beauty of the sparkling waters of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Whilst Moutuhora was occupied gathering food for their meal, Whakaari notices the dawning light and makes a dash towards the bay abandoning her sister and the fire she had been tending. Seeing her flight, Moutuhora chases after her, hurling a burning log at Whakaari in her anger. By this time, the sun had risen and the two sisters became frozen in their quest, where they remain to this day.
Both Moutuhora and Whakaari are iconic landmarks in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. They speak of the volcanic nature of this environment and the dynamic relationship between land and sea. Though deeply anchored, and seemingly unchanging, both Islands are chameleons when they desire. The proximity of Moutuhora allows her many forms to be revealed to us daily, as she plays with her natural surroundings. These are just a few of her manifestations for you to enjoy.
