Fiona Gedson works from a straw-bale constructed studio in the Waiotahe Valley, just off State Highway 2 between Ohope and Opotiki. Her children descend from Whakatohea, and Fiona grew up in the presence of the Tuhoe people - these relationships contributing to her ongoing love and respect for te toi o o tatau tipuna, the art of our forbears.
Fiona is recognised for exquisitely woven miniature kete and cloaks. The fusion of traditional Maori and pakeha influences sees Fiona embellish her weaving with silver and copper wire and delicate beading. Fiona also explores larger, mixed media works, which can be viewed in her studio.
In late 2006, Fiona was the only New Zealand artist to guest in the fibre art exhibition held in conjunction with the Tachikawa International Art Festival in Japan. She is currently working towards an October exhibition at Wine Country Gallery in Hawke's Bay. Fiona's studio is open most times, but please telephone first.
